How Lena Dunham Feels About Ex Jack Antonoff Dating a Model

Lena Dunham is among the living artists whose social lives have attracted more attention than her art itself. Though Girls (the HBO show she both created and starred in) is something of a classic now, you’re more likely to associate the controversial multi-hyphenate with her long history of putting her foot squarely in her mouth (as almost too precisely evidenced by Twitter parody account Lena Dunham Apologizes).

In addition to her oeuvre of offensive tweets, comments, outfits, etc., the 32-year-old is known for her keeping her personal life anything but guarded. Whether she’s tweeting lists of baby names she and ex-boyfriend Jack Antonoff came up with or posting photos of her surgery scars, you can count on Lena to define the term “open book.”

In a recent profile by New York Magazine’s The Cut, Dunham shows off every inch of the persona we know and [find generally problematic], opening up about her decision to undergo a full hysterectomy as well as the end of her 6-year relationship with the Bleachers frontman.

“Our relationship probably lasted longer than it should have,” Dunham confessed. “He’s a very loyal person, so he was not going to bail when the going got tough. He literally held my hand while I got an enema on New Year’s Eve while his family celebrated. But when you’re sick, so much energy goes into making sure the other person is well that you’re not even noticing maybe our schedules aren’t compatible. Maybe we want different things out of our lives. Maybe we have different attitudes about what family means. Maybe these essential questions that people have to ask themselves all the time are not being asked, because we just want to make sure that I don’t pass out at the grocery store.”

Though both parties have moved on — Dunham’s “casually dating” an unnamed artist, and Antonoff’s reportedly seeing model and photographer Carlotta Kohl — Lena admits that the split still gets to her.

Soon after news of their breakup went public, rumors began churning that Antonoff was dating his and Dunham’s mutual friend, singer Lorde. And though both Jack and the “Royals” songstress refuted the “dumb heteronormative gossip,” the reports made Dunham feel “awful.”

“I don’t think anything happened between them,” she clarified. “I can never know someone else’s life. I have never spoken to Ella [Lorde] about it. We haven’t talked since Jack and I broke up. It was awful, and I couldn’t do anything about it except trust that what he was saying to me was true.”

Similarly, Dunham has some thoughts about Antonoff’s new girlfriend, Kohl. “I thought I was kind of proving weird girls can have love too,” she said of dating Jack. “And now he’s dating somebody who looks regular and normal and like girls are supposed to look.”

Note: Kohl is a 5’9 fashion model whose campaign and runway credits include Gucci, Jill Stuart, Gap, and Juicy Couture, so “normal” looking maybe isn’t the best description?

Of course, Jack isn’t the only notable breakup Dunham’s endured in the public eye. The Girls creator and her longtime producing partner Jenni Konner went their separate ways earlier this year, announcing the dissolvement of their production company over the summer and the subsequent end to their female empowerment newsletter, Lenny Letter, just last month.

“Maybe my illness made me impossible to be close to, maybe my fame made me impossible to be close to … I’ll work that stuff out in the future, but I was not operating in healthy relationship to the people closest to me,” Dunham said in reference to her professional and personal relationship with Konner. “Now she doesn’t have to absorb whatever bullshit I tweet that day,” she continued. “Whatever I do doesn’t have to now be hers, which, I’m sure I’d imagine if I were her, would be a relief.”

Perhaps Dunham’s relationship with the world at large can be best described with her own words: “Yeah, I’m not for everyone.”
