Game of Thrones Star Gwendoline Christie Wins British Style Award at the 2015 BFAs
If you're a Game of Thrones fan, you know Gwendoline Christie. The actress has moved viewers of the HBO show for several seasons as Brienne of Tarth, but filming scenes for the highly anticipated sixth season isn't all she's been up to as of late: Anyone with an interest in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens knows that Christie portrays Phasma, a character who wears Stormtrooper-like mirrored armor, and she appeared in this past weekend's No. 1 movie, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (in a memorable scene as Commander Lyme, a past Games victor).
But on top of that, the star (and face of Vivienne Westwood's fall 2015 campaign) won the British Style – Red Carpet Ambassador award at the 2015 British Fashion Awards Monday night, where Kate Bosworth (pictured below, with Christie and Jefferson Hack) presented her with the honor. The beauty shared details about her stunning metallic Vivienne Westwood gown with InStyle—and revealed which GoT character gives her wardrobe envy as well her love for her silver suit of armor from Star Wars.
Tell us about your British Fashion Awards look.
I am wearing Vivienne Westwood Couture as I am the face of their A/W '15 campaign! I adore this dress and the hammered metal sequins give the tiniest nod to the armor I'm known for wearing. The dress looks like an award, it's so glitteringly splendid!
How has your red carpet style evolved since your first appearance?
I have always been interested in design and love to experiment with different images. The haircut given to me on Game of Thrones by hair designer extraordinaire Kevin Alexander has meant that I have been able to venture into style territories I had never considered and explore different silhouettes.
Who takes the longest to transform into: Brienne of Tarth, Commander Lyme, or Phasma? What style lessons has donning suits of armor taught you?
I think Brienne of Tarth takes the longest transformation as there's a lot of brilliantly concealed lacing and straps. Donning suits of armor is much like putting on a period costume dress—they both have a particular process of dressing and it's fascinating to look at their structure. Modern dress is certainly quicker and easier!
If you could take any outfit from any of the characters from Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games, and Star Wars for your own wardrobe which would you pick?
I love my silver armor in Star Wars designed by Michael Kaplan, whose work I have long admired. It is a particular thrill to wear that look!
Which Game of Thrones character do you relate to the most when it comes to fashion?
I envy Cersei on Game of Thrones wardrobe the most—the brilliant Michele Clapton really shows her exceptional design acumen through Cersei's nonstop fabulous gowns.
It was a thrill to see you on the Vivienne Westwood runway and in the brand's campaign—what fashion-related projects should we watch for next?
It was a dream come true to be involved with Vivienne Westwood's campaign and walk in her show. At the moment I'm working on the looks for the Star Wars premieres with some wonderful people, which I'm hugely excited about. Other than that, I'm up for grabs!
