In 1958, she graduated with a master of arts in library sciences from Columbia University. both degrees were earned by Charlotte.
In the beginning, she was the chief librarian for Compton Advertising in New York. After that, she moved on to become an information specialist for the General Dynamics Corporation in Rochester, New York. After that, she worked as an information specialist for the Curtiss-Wright Corporation in New Jersey. On the job at Curtiss-Wright, she was introduced to her first husband, William Devers.
After being married in 1967, they moved to Armonk, which is situated in Westchester County, New York. There, Bill found employment with IBM, while Charlotte took a position as the director of the New Castle Town Library in Chappaqua where she worked. Charlotte had a significant role in the civic affairs of Westchester County, including her involvement with the local historical society.
