AINT JEMIMA!

Publish date: 2024-06-05

The breakfast brand Aunt Jemima is removing its logo and will be renamed, amid public outcry that the branding perpetuated a racist stereotype, its parent company said Wednesday.

Quaker Oats said in a statement that the longtime brand will remove the controversial image of Aunt Jemima from its line of maple syrups, pancake mixes and other foods starting at the end of 2020, and the name change will happen at a later date.

“We recognize Aunt Jemima’s origins are based on a racial stereotype," Kristin Kroepfl, vice president and chief marketing officer of Quaker Foods North America, said in a statement to NBC News. "While work has been done over the years to update the brand in a manner intended to be appropriate and respectful, we realize those changes are not enough.”

Quaker Oats, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, owns the Aunt Jemima brand, which has been around for more than 130 years. The logo featured an image of a smiling black woman that has been criticized for years for depicting a racist stereotype dating back to slavery. The company has made changes to soften the image over the years, including removing the character's kerchief.

“We acknowledge the brand has not progressed enough to appropriately reflect the confidence, warmth and dignity that we would like it to stand for today,” Kroepfl said. “We are starting by removing the image and changing the name. We will continue the conversation by gathering diverse perspectives from both our organization and the Black community to further evolve the brand and make it one everyone can be proud to have in their pantry.”

Pepsi also said the Aunt Jemima brand will donate $5 million to create "meaningful, ongoing support and engagement in the Black community."

The rebrand comes after “Aunt Jemima” became a trending topic on Twitter Tuesday, with many users criticizing the company for maintaining the name and logo for so long.

If we were going to keep slavery era culture, where older slaves are addresses as Aunt and Uncle, could I request that I be referred to as "Massa?"

After all, it will keep history alive.

by Anonymousreply 35June 17, 2020 1:56 PM

Even as a child in the 1950s, I was able to recognize the use of Aunt Jemima as racist. I wouldn't have known that word yet, but I knew instinctively there was something shameful about going back to that slave imagery. We were a Log Cabin family (back when they actually used maple syrup).

by Anonymousreply 52June 17, 2020 2:16 PM

White supremacist playbook:

Deny all knowledge of racist trope

Minimize trope into seeming innocent

Smear all critics as being hypersensitive

Assert that trope is in fact accurate portrayal.

Repeat.

It's not enough that the image of the subservient house slave/mammy figure brings you such perverse delights-- you've got to pour salt in the wound by pretending it's a new experience to have the history and why it's racist explained to you for the 1000th time.

Corporations are some of the most conservative organizations around. That means there has been a sea change in attitudes across the country. Anyone who blames "snowflake liberals" for these changes is going to be left behind, just like segragationists were in the early 60s.

Thankfully, there aren't enough assholes on the wrong side of history to keep those businesses afloat and their voices have no influence. That's why a place like Costco kept their "Masks in store" policy. It was mostly moronic deplorables who scream about "mah freedum" not to wear one.

Aunt Jemima pancake mix has bleached flour... another reason for Jemima to retire.

by Anonymousreply 140June 17, 2020 6:09 PM

I went to junior high with a girl who's grandmother posed for the original Aunt Jemima photo. She came in and spoke to our class about how she was discovered and what an honor it was to be put on the cover. This was around 1974 and although there was some amount of discussion about it being a stereotype, she said she'd seen much worse in her life.

by Anonymousreply 141June 17, 2020 6:10 PM

Part of the reason she came in was because the kids found out about it and started calling the girl Aunt Jemima. It was an attempt at anti-bullying and it worked.

I grew up in the South and was raised by elderly black ladies.

They talked like this. And some of the old black men acted like Hoke from Driving Miss Daisy doing yardwork and such. My school wasn't mixed until fourth grade in 1970. But I'd grown up with Evelyn and Josie's families, so it was no big deal to me. I had the first integrated birthday party in town. When my mother found out some parents weren't letting their kids attend because I'd invited a black girl, she got on the phone with them toot sweet. It only took the Southern tradition of public shame of their racism and every invite showed up.

It's time to update.

by Anonymousreply 255June 18, 2020 2:09 AM

It is really quite stunning that some of you can’t see how the continuation of the Aunt Jemima brand would be extremely problematic. Changing the depiction of the woman on the package hardly mattered. It was rooted in negative stereotypes that placed black women as servants and cooks. You can try and explain it away, but the fact remains for much of its 130-year history the racism was front and center. In the early days it was rather explicit. That we accepted this for so long is no reason to keep perpetuating it.

Over the last 160 years there have been many brands that have come and gone. This is not anything to get worked up about. They’re going to rebrand it, so the change is not about being unable to obtain the product — just the product being sold under that name.

Are you really that damned obtuse? Apparently.

The character was taken from a minstrel show, and relied on stereotypes that were borne out of hundreds of years of forced servitude. They were further perpetuated during Jim Crow when the only acceptable role for black women involved domestic service — where these women were generally paid meager wages and often had to bear the brunt of their employers’ racism.

So, most definitely not simply “a servant or a cook.” 🙄

by Anonymousreply 299June 18, 2020 4:45 AM

This has been a fun thread and given me a lot of giggles, before it took this serious turn. I'm a black guy getting dangerously close to 50. I've seen these images all my life and I never really have given much thought to them and never found them particularly offensive. They were just there. I even collected a few of these things. I think I even went as Uncle Ben to a Halloween party once.

But, if there are people who find these images and relics of the past offensive and a roadblock to progress, then get rid of them. Losing Aunt Jemima is no great blow to the republic. Hopefully she will have a peaceful retirement with Josephine the Plumber, Madge the Manicurist, Rosie the Waitress, and Mr. Whipple.

The character and her name are literally the brand. The marketing characters you named are not brands. An appropriate comparison would be Betty Crocker.

by Anonymousreply 307June 18, 2020 5:34 AM

I think at this point it is becoming too problematic to have depictions of any humans on product packaging. They should simply redesign them to only feature text and pictures of the food inside the box and maybe a landscape or the like.

R315. The restaurant’s founders, Sam Battistone Sr. and Newell Bohnett, originally derived the name by combining their nicknames “Sam” and “Bo.” Therefore the name Sambos. But they have been dogged as racist for decades. It's sketchy considering their decor. I grew up there, I know the story well. Back in the day it brought the whole chain down just to that one location is left.

My hunch was that the name was authentically not racist as the two owners. But then someone had the bright idea to tie it into a story with a similar name completely clueless at the time it was racist.

Anna Mae Harrington was a cook who was discovered by Quaker Oats in 1935. She was chosen to portray Aunt Jemima as a spokeswoman, and she did so around the United States for 20 years dressed up as Aunt Jemima. Her great-grandson says ending the brand is ERASURE of black history and the first black women in marketing.

Harrington's family claimed her pancake recipe was also used by Quaker Oaks, and sued Quaker Oats in 2014. Quaker Oaks corporate lawyers defeated them in court when a judge threw out the case. Funny how Quaker Oaks hasn't mentioned this at this week!

As a kid of the '80s, I ate and loved Cream of Wheat, Aunt Jemima waffles and pancakes (so glad when my mom switched from Bisquick) and Uncle Ben's all the time. They were the best.

I would guess there would be some value in having black faces associated with the care, warmth and nourishment provided by beloved brands at the top of their categories.

When my mom said we were having Cream of Wheat with brown sugar or Aunt Jemima waffles, I didn't get excited because a black character was serving me and reinforcing my privilege. I got excited because they were fucking delicious! It was my white mom who was making breakfast.

But it's not my place to complain. I'm not black. My perspective is not the one that matters. If those symbols make black people feel oppressed, let 'em go and rebrand. Just don't change the recipes!

No, R395. Just no. Please tell us that you are being sarcastic.

1. Aunt Jemima is not an important American cultural icon. It's a brand. That's all. Just a device. Not cultural, though it did seek to capitalize on a popular character built on racial stereotypes embedded in our culture. Not at all an icon. On the brand's very best and most popular day, no one was venerating pancakes or syrup or fictional Aunt Jemima herself. There are people who rise to the level of 'an important American icon,' but Aunt Jemima isn't one of them.

2. If people want to buy perishables as remembrances, they really are too fucking stupid to live. Even packed with preservatives as these products surely are, they aren't going to last long enough to be much of a remembrance. Not even if one is accustomed to keeping remembrances in the refrigerator.

by Anonymousreply 401June 19, 2020 1:59 PM

R401 doesn't know what the word icon means.

by Anonymousreply 402June 19, 2020 2:14 PM

Fuck you, R402. The Aunt Jemima brand has nothing on the Uncle Ben's brand or Cream of Wheat. All three brands trade on old racial stereotypes and that's the end of it. There is nothing about any of them that raises them up to the sort of exalted level that makes something an icon. They come from a dark part of a culture, but add nothing new to it. None of them are more central to the American experience than the Quaker Oats brand, Elsie the cow, Josephine the Lady Plumber, or Madge the manicurist.

I just can't believe that this site, where there are been bloody street brawls about off the shelf mayo versus making it yourself, is this hung up over pancake mix.

Yes, but when you fill her with dark syrup she reminds people of a mammy. Being right next to Aunt J. Doesn’t help.

Aunt Jemima will be renamed "Marsha's" and her image replaced with that of Marsha P. Johnson.

Like r52, we were a Log Cabin syrup family. Even as a boy, I knew damn well Aunt Jemima was a slave. It helped to have grown up in Detroit and learned about the '67 race riots while still very young. Pretty sure my mom simply refused to buy any of that bigoted-marketing crap. And she was anything but a woke Karen. She worked full-time, and my brothers & I were latchkey kids. She worked alongside African-American women and knew damn well what was racist - and misogynistic.

Very surprised - but not shocked - to see middle-aged, white DataLoungers defending this garbage. Many Americans are resistant to change of any kind.

From the links above:

[quote] Though there have been debates over Mrs. Butterworth’s race, some have associated the shape of the brand’s syrup bottles with the offensive "Mammy" racial caricature of stereotype for Black women.

by Anonymousreply 423June 19, 2020 9:08 PM

We were a Log Cabin family, too ... but then I don't remember there being an Aunt Jemima syrup back in the '50s/'60s. It was only a pancake mix as far as I know. I do remember when Mrs. Butterworth's came along, but before that all I can remember is Log Cabin. Were there any other national brands of syrup?

by Anonymousreply 425June 19, 2020 11:02 PM

I never liked Aunt Jemima. Even as a kid, I picked up on something ugly about it. But I loved Mrs. Butterworth. I thought the bottle was beautiful. I did think she was supposed to be a black woman, but I never thought of it as being a disgusting depiction like Aunt Jemima. But Mrs. Butterwirth? There were days I'd open the pantry and sit her on my lap and we'd talk and talk and play games. Just me and my bottle of racist maple syrup.

I now denounce that cunt.

by Anonymousreply 426June 20, 2020 1:24 AM

My great grandmother made pancakes from scratch always with corn in the batter, and she made her own syrup as well which is so easy to prepare. It's just equal parts water, brown sugar, and tbsp of butter.

R468, your intense emotion about this tells us all we need to know about you.

I never said I was triggered by the image of Aunt Jemima. I said that I do not want to see it when I am shopping. Most normal people do not want to be see reminders of things like slavery, the Holocaust, Jeffrey Dahmer, children in cages, etc on commercial products. That is a normal response. Most people find that packaging that calls to mind human suffering makes shopping an unpleasant experience.

Triggering is usually used to mean an abnormal, out-of-control, or exaggerated response. Like your post here.

by Anonymousreply 472June 23, 2020 5:34 PM

r470, I simply decided to block r468. And I'm not typically a blocker here at DL. I had previously blocked a grand total of one mentally unhealthy/unstable individual in the grocery hell threads. Some of these folks are afflicted with psychological projection just like their Orange Messiah. They constantly spew garbage terms like "triggered" when it's obvious what they are describing is actually their own mindset/behavior. It's so odd to run across them here on DL. More common now in the age of the Orange Stain. I have no interest in their drivel.

by Anonymousreply 473June 23, 2020 5:35 PM

R470, it is very hard to respond because the question is so stupid. So let me take it down a few levels:

Black people are overcoming. But racism also exists.

Black people in the past overcame. But racism was a huge barrier. For every Madame Walker there were hundreds of black business people who had doors shut in their faces by banks and landlords.

Things are better now. But that is different than things being good.

Maybe a package in a grocery aisle is a small thing, but if we cannot show even the small courtesy of eliminating a form of address from the slavery era from a package--how can we hope to tackle the bigger things?

by Anonymousreply 474June 23, 2020 5:47 PM

^^^Sorry, but that should have been addressed to R472.

by Anonymousreply 476June 23, 2020 5:55 PM

I must say I have recently read some things, and I've watched some vintage video of how Aunt Jemima was treated: she was treated as a rock star everywhere she went.

The vintage film clip I saw featured her alighting from a quite grand limousine at a television studio for an appearance. The white chauffeur in proper livery stretched out his hand to her, aiding her up on the curb.

People often requested her autograph as well. She was featured in cooking demos, and from what I read, was considered a cooking authority.

by Anonymousreply 477June 23, 2020 6:16 PM

When you learn about how stereotypical they portrayed her image years ago, you can understand why the company finally chose to remove her from their products. Despite how long ago this occurred, the memory of its racists origins lingers on to this very day.

Even though many Blacks made their peace with that history, other Blacks (and other people) remained offended by it, or became offended once they learned about the story behind Aunt Jemima.

People who used these products might miss seeing a familiar image they've known since childhood, but ultimately, its not necessary to have in order to prepare and eat tasty pancakes.

by Anonymousreply 519June 25, 2020 1:44 AM

They modernised images of Betty Crocker. Uncle Ben, and Aunt Jemima over the years in order to portray them in a less stereotypical, and more positive light. I honestly don't associate the brands with racism.

I'm not sure of the Cream of Wheat bloke, however. That said, and I posted earlier on how well the twenty-plus year Aunt Jemima was treated as a rock star, and how her relatives feel about the re-branding. I am however a daft white man, as I had no inkling Mrs. Buttersworth was meant to be a black woman in slave costume.

Last year before Passover, Manischewitz released a limited edition tin of macaroons featuring the font, and image of Mrs. Maisel... I honestly don't see the difference. I recall in the 70s there were box mixes of "Mrs. Manischewitz" potato knish with a picture of someone's bubbie on the box. Are these anti-semitic? I remember it was sort of a caricature portrait. I don't wish to make any black person to feel less than, or embarrassed about these products, but I think in light of the actual history of Aunt Jemima, this seems a bit odd. I might be ignorant of the "Aunt & Uncle" tradition... A friend asked me about that recently.

Is that the real objection, or faux pas? I wish that someone could clue me in!

by Anonymousreply 520June 25, 2020 1:55 AM

r519 name changes were very common then among many Northern Europeans as well. Germans, Swedes, Norwegians etc. often Anglicized their names or took and English name in order to better assimilate.

by Anonymousreply 521June 25, 2020 1:57 AM

R520, Aunt and Uncle were common ways to address older slaves, which is how Jemima got "Aunt". The package carries the imprint of slavery.

Mrs. Maisel is not a slave. At worst she is a neglected wife.

Maybe Gold Star Bagels or Rye Bread Makes Your Free or some Holocaust allusion on a package would be a better analog than Mrs. Maisel or a kindly grandma (unless the Bubbe has a number tattooed on her arm).

by Anonymousreply 522June 25, 2020 2:22 AM

R522, "Aunt" and "Uncle" are still honorifics in many cultures and many parts of the country. I was brought up (in NYC) to address my parents' close friends as "Aunt Carol" and "Uncle Sid," etc. I have friends who are Trinidadian and their child addresses all adults she knows well as "Aunt" and "Uncle."

by Anonymousreply 523June 25, 2020 2:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 524June 25, 2020 2:27 AM

R523, but if you look at the early packaging of Aunt Jemima's the intent is not a general honorific but a form of address to a "mammy."

R524 can write the first testimonial for Gold Star Bagels.

"There are lots of gold stars in art! This packaging has nothing to do with anti-Semitism. What an insane world that people would think so!"

by Anonymousreply 526June 25, 2020 2:30 AM

My parents make me call that nasty man next door "Uncle."

by Anonymousreply 527June 25, 2020 2:48 AM

Cheers R522 for your reply, and input. I has suspected as much , after my American friend suggested as much. She's a "Northerner" and wasn't quite sure, and I'm British, so thank you again for the clarification.

I wasn't trying to equate oppression of Jews to slavery, or American blacks in general, but remember the portrait on the potato knish box to be something of a caricature, and I didn't find it particularly flattering, or necessary, so I give you props, and mad respect.

Three years ago, a friend sent me images from an auction here in the States of a lot comprised of multiple tins of seafood with the brand name being "Negro Head" and a portrait of a black man not unlike "Uncle Ben" I found it odd then as well. Some later issued tins, still featured the same gent's portrait, but "Negro Head" had been removed. I don't know if anyone here has familiarity with that brand, but to my sense, it was ridiculously racist.

Little Debbie, speaking on behalf of "height challenged" people everywhere, plaintively asks " Hey, what the fuck is up with this "little" shit?!!"

People don't know that, before their divorce, Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben were foster parents to Little Debbie. However, when she married Speedy, from Alka-Seltzer, an extreme racist, she never spoke to her foster parents again.

As we all know, Little Debbie died in the World Trade Center, in 2001, after eating improperly prepared blowfish. Jemima died in 1998 at the Hollywood Trademarks Home. Speedy was found dead in an alley in LA in the 60s from an apparent drug overdose and Uncle Ben is still with us at the age of 154.

by Anonymousreply 530June 25, 2020 3:22 AM

Uncle Ben was in a clandestine relationship with the Calgon guy. Hence the term "rice queen."

WTF is Mr. Clean supposed to be?

by Anonymousreply 532June 25, 2020 3:34 AM

To Miss Carpenter at R511 : You also found the song "Rainbow Connection" offensive because it wasn't about sex, so there's that.

by Anonymousreply 535June 25, 2020 3:58 AM

Is Mr. Potato offensive to potatoes?

by Anonymousreply 536June 25, 2020 4:18 AM

I just wanna know what that Stella D'oro looks like...

by Anonymousreply 538June 25, 2020 4:26 AM

Stella D'Oro means "gold star," so go back to R526.

by Anonymousreply 540June 25, 2020 6:12 AM

Referring back to Aunt Jemima's origins or past and claiming that makes the current product offensive is like saying that Coca-Cola should be banned because it once had cocaine in it. What matters is what it is now.

by Anonymousreply 541June 25, 2020 6:21 AM

Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, the Cream of Wheat guy all have an origin and the origin is this.

[quote]name changes were very common then among many Northern Europeans as well. Germans, Swedes, Norwegians etc. often Anglicized their names or took and English name in order to better assimilate.

No shit Sherlock. I happen to be a descendant of one of them and if I told you my last name you would laugh. Pressuring someone to change their given name is still a form of racism regardless of how many people feel obligated to do it just to not be isolated. Immigrants today from those same country don't do that and nothing has stopped them from assimilating.

[quote]Pressuring someone to change their given name is still a form of racism regardless of how many people feel obligated to do it just to not be isolated.

Many people did it voluntarily. They wanted to be Americans, and wanted to leave their birth countries behind. Many of them never returned to their birth countries, and wanted nothing to do with them. This is a foreign concept today but that's just how things were.

[quote]Immigrants today from those same country don't do that and nothing has stopped them from assimilating.

It's a totally different world today.

by Anonymousreply 544June 25, 2020 2:20 PM

The black Ant Jemima spokes woman did it voluntarily too. Stop trying to justify racism that Italian Americans also faced.

[quote]Many of them never returned to their birth countries, and wanted nothing to do with them.

Also your simplistic understanding of Italian history is wrong. They left because of poverty and America looked like it offered more opportunities at the time. I don't know a single Italian born immigrant that doesn't have fond memories of Italy or remain extremely loyal to their motherland. Even generations later.

I actually *am* Italian-American, dipshit, and that's not what I said. I said they wanted nothing to do with their home countries, i.e. they wanted to be Americans and stay in America. They were glad to leave all the political conflict, social conflict etc. behind. In the first half of the 20th Century, the US was practically Utopia compared to the turmoil and strife of many European countries. European immigrants sailed to America and never looked back.

by Anonymousreply 547June 26, 2020 1:37 AM

Even the jingle was risque - Nothing could finer than the taste of Aunt Jemima in the mooooorning.

by Anonymousreply 548June 26, 2020 1:41 AM

I am part Italian as well, check your facts, a large percentage of Italians did in fact move back.

by Anonymousreply 549June 26, 2020 1:41 AM

Of course many immigrants moved back. And many stayed.

by Anonymousreply 550June 26, 2020 1:51 AM

Angela moved back. Sophia stayed.

R546 As odd as the name may sound to some, as a Jew, it has never bothered me a bit. Funnily enough, after my Dad was struck with Alzheimers, he began to "wander" out the house...my mum once said, "I wonder what the neighbours think...here comes the wandering Jew again?" We both had a good laugh.

I believe naming the plant simply is an allusion to the diaspora, and how resilient we are as a people. We've spread to all corners of the world, as this plant is want to do as well.

by Anonymousreply 553June 27, 2020 12:43 AM

It's still degrading r553. Just because you found humor in something dose not excuse it worth. Some people though lamp shades out of human skin were pretty and a clever use of trash.

by Anonymousreply 554June 27, 2020 1:18 AM

Any truth to the rumor that Betty Crocker was the one who called INS on Juan Valdez?

by Anonymousreply 555June 27, 2020 1:52 AM

Jesus R554 , isnt that a tad of a reach ? Its just a plant .Not an indictment against the jewish race.

by Anonymousreply 556June 27, 2020 1:53 AM

And it's just a bottle of syrup R556.

by Anonymousreply 557June 27, 2020 2:10 AM

The idea that Mrs. Butterworth is a black woman is pretty racist if you think about it.

"Oh look, a heavyset docile woman associated with flood...... she MUST BE BLACK!"

Oh, the irony!

by Anonymousreply 558June 27, 2020 4:25 AM

r558 Well, the bottle IS brown.

by Anonymousreply 560June 27, 2020 4:27 AM

Not when the syrup comes out of it.

by Anonymousreply 566June 27, 2020 4:46 AM

That's not funny, R554. You owe R553 a most sincere apology.

And you owe it to the rest of us to just go away for a long, long, time.

by Anonymousreply 567June 27, 2020 1:28 PM

I don't owe anyone an apology for calling out their racism just because THEY felt since it was funny, its not racist. Sometimes you have to use biting example to get through to people. The kind that get upset if you make a joke about their background because that's "off limits" but its ok for them to wright off their racism of other people because they found it humorous.

by Anonymousreply 568June 28, 2020 1:28 PM

R568 Are you Jewish? If not, PLEASE do not speak for me in this conversation. I don't need to apologise as a nearly fifty-two year-old Jew for NOT finding "Wandering Jew" offensive, or pejorative. Furthermore, it's a bit off-topic, however we Jews are not a "race" per se.

I have posted some sympathetic responses to your pleas here. About the plight of African-Americans being portrayed different to how they would prefer. I deferred to that, and had assumed you were African-American yourself. (not that you can't be both black and Jewish, however I don't believe this is the case herein)

What you most certainly do owe an apology for is the lampshade allusion. Very ugly, unnecessary, and especially repugnant to me, as a Jew who lost many relatives in two camps. It wasn't germane here, and I've never heard such an equating to the naming of said plant.

You're reaching to make rubbish PC arguments is all. I can see right through you. Jews don't need you, black or otherwise telling us what we ought to deem offensive or pejorative.

The companies that are rebranding (Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben's, Mrs. Butterworth) are doing so by erasing black people from their logos and packaging. Seems a step back in a way.
